Lenses

Once you've chosen your frame, the Optical Advisor will discuss lens options with you.  We will help you choose the most suitable type of lens and coatings for your prescription, frame and usage requirements.

We provide standard uncoated plastic lenses which we can glaze onsite in around twenty minutes.  We can also provide coated plastic lenses which are usually ready within twenty four hours.  We also provide polycarbonate lenses and high index lenses as well as all ranges of bifocals and varifocals, including some specialist lenses for VDU use.  We strongly recommend anti-scratch and anti-reflective coatings on all of our spectacles.  This will keep them looking good and performing at their best.

For UV protection we also recommend Transitions lenses and UV coatings, or polarised lenses for various water sports.

Have a look at our list below for more information on the types of lenses that are available.

  • Single Vision - Our standard lenses are single vision and are suitable if you need glasses for either distance or near vision correction.
  • Bifocal - These have a section containing a reading lens and are used to correct both distance and near vision at the same time.
  • Varifocal - Like bifocals, varifocals correct both distance and near vision together.  However they differ as the change from distance to near in a varifocal is graduated, and these will work for intermediate vision correction (between distance and near) as well.
  • High Index - Suitable for stronger prescriptions, these lenses provide all the power of the standard lens, but are much thinner.
  • Polycarbonate - These are the strongest, most impact-resistant lenses available, and are also thinner and lighter than standard plastic lenses.  These are especially suited for use with rimless frames, as well as sports eyewear.
  • Transitions - Also known as photochromic lenses, these are clear lenses which darken when exposed to UV rays. They also have a UV coating which protects your eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays.  Many people enjoy the convenience of transitions, as they only need one pair of glasses for both indoors and out.
  • Polarised - These cut out reflections from horizontal surfaces including water, snow, wet roads and car windshields, making them extremely useful for driving, fishing and any snow or water sports.  They also have a protective UV coating.

Coatings

To ensure the best performance from your glasses, we offer a range of coatings for your lenses.

  • Hard Coat - Protects your lenses against minor scratches, to keep them looking and performing their very best.
  • Anti-reflection - Reduces glare from artificial lighting, computer screens and car windshields.  We recommend this coating to anyone using their glasses for driving or VDU use.
  • Ultraviolet - Protects your eyes from the harmful ultraviolet rays present in sunlight.  We would recommend this if you would frequently be wearing your glasses outdoors.
